When we get asked to do an IT audit for a new customer we often discover that they are using a cheap backup solution. Of course as IT professionals this makes us squirm but only because we’ve seen the damage cheap backups can cause to a business!
There’s 2 types of businesses when it comes to data backups…those who have lost data and those who will!
The ones that have lost data inevitably end up knocking on our door with their tail between their legs having lost vabluable data which has caused massive disruption to their business and ultimately loss of revenue.
This is why we bang the drum about having a solid Backup and Disaster Recovery Solution.
What Would It Mean To Your Business If You Lost Your Data?
What we often find is businesses don’t realise just how valuable their data is. Until they lose it! The word ‘data’ crops up in every day conversations for all types of reasons and businesses can lose sight of the fact that they need this valueable data for their business to operate and if it’s not available to them it can cause all types of problems.
Data Loss Does Happen!
Data loss does happen to both big and small businesses and can be caused by a myriad of factors:
- Cyber-attacks such as Phishing or Ransomware
- Weak passwords
- Disgruntled employees
- Disasters such as storms, floods etc
- Loss of equipment such as USB drives
- Damaged computers
Insurance company Hiscox say that UK small businesses are targeted with 65,000 attempted cyber attacks per day They set up a real-time cyber attack campaign, CyberLive, which showed live attacks on billboards in prominent stations in the UK. Their digital screens were connected to live Proxy Servers (the kind small businesses would use) and a live attack was shown with a pulsating red dot on the screen. Interesting but scary stuff! Things To Consider About Your Backups
Some local backup solutions won’t protect you from encryption attacks so always make sure your backup includes a cloud element. It needs to keep multiple versions and not just one copy to ensure you have version control. Backing up when your files are encrypted doesn’t help you and could destroy your previously good backups.
A really good backup solution will also perform test recoveries for you and even send a screenshot of the login screen and test key services are running for you as part of the backup verification process.
So in a nutshell, that’s why cheap backups don’t back up!
