We know that Security Awareness Training might not be the top of your list of importance, but there’s a lot of reasons why it should be.
When we think about data breaches or cyber attacks we tend to presume that the threats are external. But the biggest threat could actually come from within your business. Inside ‘attacks’ can be some of the most dangerous especially when we’re talking about a disgruntled employee. However often it’s the uneducated employee that exposes the business to a data breach or cyber attack.
We hear on the news about a lot of high-profile data breaches, but we don’t get to know about the smaller businesses that are often seen as easy targets and whose businesses really suffer when there’s a data breach or cyber attack.
A quick look down the list of recent data breaches on this BBC website shows that a lot of the breaches were down to simple user errors and no doubt lack of security awareness training.
Since the implementation of GDPR on the 25th May 2018 whenever there is a data breach organisations need to be able to demonstrate what training has been given to prevent it happening again.
Not only are businesses falling foul to data breaches but they are also vulnerable when it comes to cyber attacks because they often have the attitude of “it won’t happen to us”. But it does.
Human Error & Behaviour
As much as we’d like to put the blame on data breaches and cyber attacks being down to cyber criminals, in fact human error or behaviour is the main culprit. New research from BAE Systems has revealed that human error is still a major vulnerability.
