When it comes to buying a new laptop we often get asked “What is the difference between a business laptop and a consumer laptop?”.
Consumer laptops are often inexpensive and readily available which make them an attractive option but a business class laptop includes features that generally aren’t found in consumer laptops and will, in the long run save you money.
Business laptops are built for security and IT Management.
We’ve had a few customers over the years that have thought that our recommendations were too expensive. They were more expensive in the short term from a capital expenditure point of view, but the cost of a laptop or computer is not just about the initial buy price.
When you buy a laptop or other computer then you need the software to go with it too. When buying a consumer laptop you will no doubt purchase the Home Edition of Windows and it usually comes with pre-loaded security software that simply will not protect your business from all the cyber security threats out there.
Home Editions of Windows are not meant for business and many features are disabled that make managing them more time consuming and more expensive and inevitably end up needing upgrading or replacing.
Consumer laptops and computers are not as durable as business laptops and often have cheaper components. They don’t last as long and don’t have the extended warranties that come with business laptops so need replacing more often and in some cases physically are not capable of supporting the software needed for todays business data compliance requirements under the GDPR and general good practice.
Having a good graphics card and a high processor with a big hard drive doesn’t make it a good business computer, it makes it a good games machine and it will inevitably need to be replaced to enable you to use the laptop effectively for your business.
So to answer the question “What Is The Difference Between A Business Laptop And A Consumer Laptop?” If you want a laptop that will enable you to do business related tasks at ease, be more productive, protect you against cyber security threats, last longer and ultimately save you money then a business laptop is the choice for you.
